photos and news! cat power:

cat power and the memphis rhythm band were amazing to see live, with chan more confident than expected..the band had alot to do with this it seemed. and perhaps the fact that she is now advertising for chanel. mostly tracks from the greatest, but her crazy dancing and facial expressions kept us entertained.
hamburg--somewhat disappointing especially the erotic art museum. walking aimlessly along the reeper bahn was not pleasant--rubbish and used condoms abound. hmmmmmmmmmmm. became very pumped for and informed about the us congress elections as we spent most of the time watching cnn in our hotel.
berlin-- what a city!! art, culture, clubs, young people, music, shopping, and history! spent far too much time on the u-bahn, determined to get the most out of our €25 one week passes. yr 11 and 12 history prize winner embo lapped up our visits to the reichstag, the holocaust memorial and the east side gallery (the longest stretch of the berlin wall still standing). The architecture of the recently built sony centre (europe's sony headquarters) was very impressive, especially considering that it stands on the former wasteland that was the gap between east and west berlin. Wandering through the many neighbourhoods of Berlin, checking out the difference in architecture between the former East and West (ie. Karl Marx Allee and its Communist 'wedding-cake' style buildings) was fascinating, however all of the districts were consistent in that there were plenty of cheap, good-quality eateries, unique shops and happening bars and clubs. Our Saturday night was spent at 2 clubs in Mitte: the King Kong Club, then we braved the Russian Disco at Kaffee Burger (HIGHLY over-rated), and then back to King Kong where we believe our requests totally turned around the DJs night.
Emma: 'We're well-dressed, we're good dancers, we hold intelligent conversation - why won't the DJ just fucking play Maneater already?!'

prague-- although an extremely beautiful city, prague's charm was somewhat marred by the tacky tourist shops scattered everywhere. the unbelievably good exchange rate and cheap prices kept us happy though, and we enjoyed, among other things, some traditional Czech dumplings and baked camembert on toast, which keelia is determined to make once we're home. Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the astronomical clock were all highlights. Lowlights included too many Americans in our hostel and in Prague in general, one of whom asked us if we were 'missionaries' and then later went on to call us 'pot head sisters'. Idiot.

scheuring-- the german fitzpatrick's allowed us to stay with them just outside Munich for a couple of days. We went for walks through the village, sampled bavarian food and wine, drank endless cups of tea and went and saw this:

vienna-- Expensive but with really impressive galleries, the highlight of which was the Kunst Haus Wien. Aaron went lala over it. We ate breakfast at the same cafe every morning, it was pretty much the best deal in vienna. This was the last stop on our whirlwind trip, and at this point we parted ways: Emma flew off to London to meet Simon, and Keelia travelled south to Italy with Aaron.

EMMA: Rather than the 10 days I'd thought I'd be spending in London, this only turned out to be about 4 as Simon sprung a 5-day trip to NY on me. Needless to say, this was an absolutely amazing 5 days. Visiting the Empire State Building, Central Park and MoMA were all fantastic New York experiences but I loved walking around SoHo, the East Village, Greenwich, MePa and Brooklyn looking in all the amazing shops and feeling the different atmosphere in each neighbourhood. Can't wait to go back and spend a bit more time getting to know the city.
Meeting up with Keelia and Aaron in London was good times, however brief. Portobello Road Markets on Saturday were a riot, with stall holders ripping into Simon the whole day and providing endless amusement for the rest of us.
KEELIA: from vienna caught a long, long train to florence where aaron and i spent 4 days in the gorgeous home of large naked men and jewlery stores. from there headed to the chaotic rome, less pleasant than florence but history and glitz were in great abundance. next stop london, saw guys and dolls on the west end! (not as good as oklahoma but very, very enjoyable---neither guys and dolls or oklahoma were in the top 10 musicals of all time as voted by YOU. by who you ask? not by me thats for sure. wtffffff???) spent several days in manchester, then back to dublin for christmas with the family and aaron. berlin nye!! phewwwwwww. much, much debt. the memories gained over the past 5 months that will last a lifetime i think? nearly priceless. ask me when i begin full time work the moment i get home.
