photos and news! cat power:

cat power and the memphis rhythm band were amazing to see live, with chan more confident than expected..the band had alot to do with this it seemed. and perhaps the fact that she is now advertising for chanel. mostly tracks from the greatest, but her crazy dancing and facial expressions kept us entertained.

hamburg--somewhat disappointing especially the erotic art museum. walking aimlessly along the reeper bahn was not pleasant--rubbish and used condoms abound. hmmmmmmmmmmm. became very pumped for and informed about the us congress elections as we spent most of the time watching cnn in our hotel.

berlin-- what a city!! art, culture, clubs, young people, music, shopping, and history! spent far too much time on the u-bahn, determined to get the most out of our €25 one week passes. yr 11 and 12 history prize winner embo lapped up our visits to the reichstag, the holocaust memorial and the east side gallery (the longest stretch of the berlin wall still standing). The architecture of the recently built sony centre (europe's sony headquarters) was very impressive, especially considering that it stands on the former wasteland that was the gap between east and west berlin. Wandering through the many neighbourhoods of Berlin, checking out the difference in architecture between the former East and West (ie. Karl Marx Allee and its Communist 'wedding-cake' style buildings) was fascinating, however all of the districts were consistent in that there were plenty of cheap, good-quality eateries, unique shops and happening bars and clubs. Our Saturday night was spent at 2 clubs in Mitte: the King Kong Club, then we braved the Russian Disco at Kaffee Burger (HIGHLY over-rated), and then back to King Kong where we believe our requests totally turned around the DJs night.
Emma: 'We're well-dressed, we're good dancers, we hold intelligent conversation - why won't the DJ just fucking play Maneater already?!'

prague-- although an extremely beautiful city, prague's charm was somewhat marred by the tacky tourist shops scattered everywhere. the unbelievably good exchange rate and cheap prices kept us happy though, and we enjoyed, among other things, some traditional Czech dumplings and baked camembert on toast, which keelia is determined to make once we're home. Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the astronomical clock were all highlights. Lowlights included too many Americans in our hostel and in Prague in general, one of whom asked us if we were 'missionaries' and then later went on to call us 'pot head sisters'. Idiot.

scheuring-- the german fitzpatrick's allowed us to stay with them just outside Munich for a couple of days. We went for walks through the village, sampled bavarian food and wine, drank endless cups of tea and went and saw this:

vienna-- Expensive but with really impressive galleries, the highlight of which was the Kunst Haus Wien. Aaron went lala over it. We ate breakfast at the same cafe every morning, it was pretty much the best deal in vienna. This was the last stop on our whirlwind trip, and at this point we parted ways: Emma flew off to London to meet Simon, and Keelia travelled south to Italy with Aaron.

EMMA: Rather than the 10 days I'd thought I'd be spending in London, this only turned out to be about 4 as Simon sprung a 5-day trip to NY on me. Needless to say, this was an absolutely amazing 5 days. Visiting the Empire State Building, Central Park and MoMA were all fantastic New York experiences but I loved walking around SoHo, the East Village, Greenwich, MePa and Brooklyn looking in all the amazing shops and feeling the different atmosphere in each neighbourhood. Can't wait to go back and spend a bit more time getting to know the city.

Meeting up with Keelia and Aaron in London was good times, however brief. Portobello Road Markets on Saturday were a riot, with stall holders ripping into Simon the whole day and providing endless amusement for the rest of us.

KEELIA: from vienna caught a long, long train to florence where aaron and i spent 4 days in the gorgeous home of large naked men and jewlery stores. from there headed to the chaotic rome, less pleasant than florence but history and glitz were in great abundance. next stop london, saw guys and dolls on the west end! (not as good as oklahoma but very, very enjoyable---neither guys and dolls or oklahoma were in the top 10 musicals of all time as voted by YOU. by who you ask? not by me thats for sure. wtffffff???) spent several days in manchester, then back to dublin for christmas with the family and aaron. berlin nye!! phewwwwwww. much, much debt. the memories gained over the past 5 months that will last a lifetime i think? nearly priceless. ask me when i begin full time work the moment i get home.

PARIS: everything and much more than expected

Posted on 2006.11.05 at 13:40
I'm going to expand on Keelia's oh-so-brief Paris commentary.

PARIS: Really amazing city. And so beautiful as well, exactly what you'd expect from the French. The people were all impeccably dressed and, rather than speaking English, scoffed at our poor French. Arseholes. Apart from that...

The Louvre was enormous. Really didnt think it was possible for a museum to be that big, feature so many great works of art and contain that many people. And everyone was right: the Mona Lisa feels like she's following you with her eyes.

The shopping was so unbelieveably good!! Good quality, not overpriced, not the same crap everywhere. And i don't think i've seen that much vintage in my life.

Had a night out on the town on Saturday night complete with male dancers in leather chaps, ballet dancers hanging from the ceiling and guys trying to pull cheesy lines about showing us how French kisses are really done. Jesus. I thought the Parisian men might be a little more suave than that but apparently not.

We also had the very moving experience of visiting both Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde's graves (once we got the right cemetery that is). Hahaha we even bought a little potted plant to put on Jim's grave.

Our week there dealing with countless flights of stairs also got us in GRRRREAT shape. The dub chub is but a distant memory now.

Till next time, au revoir!

NB::some comments found below may replicate those featured in postcards. this is because keelia is a fantastic postcard writer

BARCELONA:sangria in a restaurant, not in a park unfortunately, that would have been nice for the sake of lou. lots of sun, sleeping in the afternoon, cruising around, checking out gaudi architecture which was quite amazing, drinking g&ts, crazy swedes and cute brit boys

MARSEILLE: SHITHOLE. waste of a few days. spent most of our time in our hotel room watching french tv. did, however, experience the most delicious chocolate croissant. began speaking in french, trying to at least.

LYON: very pretty, great food (the local cuisine featured lyonnaise salad which was a treat) 4 COURSES FOR 10.50euro each. museum on the french resitance based in lyon

PARIS: everything and much more than expected

BRUSSELS: stunning buildings and city, without the tacky tourist crap that comes with the bigger cities. waffles, beer, pomme frites we did (ie tasted) it all. little boy peeing, grand place stunning

AMSTERDAM:anne franks house! purple hair = 10euro on icecream. FREEZING WEATHER... jess horrocks get your coat on, britains preparing for an ARTIC WINTER. cat power on friday, catherine and kirsten we will be thinking of you. great great great shopping

Finished work! YEEEEHHHHAAAAHHH, Keelia got a pair of pearl earrings and €50 as presents. Emma got some Australian wine - from 'South Eastern Australia' no less! Sick. There was also the excitement of a doctor getting stabbed by a patient at the psychiatric hospital where Emma spent 5 lovely weeks. Keelia experienced some abuse from Irish and many Romanian cleaners who didnt get their wages paid properly.

Past few weeks have had ups and downs. Homesickness here and there. Mainly working again and having to get up at 6 every morning and deal with dublin traffic every day has been a dampener on our spirits. However, a sighting OR sitting next to (!!) our bus boy crush would soon have the spirits soaring again!! We've christened him 'Brown Sugar'. Mmmm-mmmm! Just on the note of bus trips, on Wednesday afternoon we sat on the same bus, across the aisle from eachother, for the ENTIRE 30minute journey and didn't notice until we were both getting up to get off at our stop.

Just last weekend, we attended our first drum and bass gig - Goldie. Apparently he's quite a well-known dude: James Bond films, Celebrity Big Brother and Snatch. Impressive huh. Had a ball of a night with iain and learnt a lot about wildlife, what really goes on in MacDonalds O'Connell Street at 4am on a sunday morning, and beginning the descent downwards is not at all aided by 5 degree temperatures and pouring rain.

Hope you're all enjoying the rise in temperature and sunny days. We, on the other hand, are extending our winter wardrobes and bracing ourselves for the cold(er) weather that's to come. Find below pictures of us in our winter coats!!!! We feel like our initiation into womanhood has come full circle. Fuck babies and all that. Coats are where it's at.

Thats right. we saw dizzee rascal. live. we call him diz now. We are practically his bitches. In other news, we just got back from a week in london. Amazing stuff. Amongst other things we spent our time enjoying the following:

*The national portrait gallery: the tudor section was pretty sick and keelia had an emotional moment glimpsing the BLUR portraits.

*Big ben- not as big as we anticipated but hey, size isnt everything. nice location

* red telephone boxes and buses

*getting hot for the (free) chip at HMV oxford st

*a day at reading--£2 bottles of water hit us hard. More importantly- peaches, belle and sebastian, yeah yeah yeahs (karen o was hot hot hot), eagles of death metal, dizzee rascal, primal scream (they opened with movin on up--never seen so many joyous people dancing)

*Trafalgar square- less pigeons than keelia remembered, more tourists

*soho- SEXXX SHOPSS. and the actual BAR ITALIA (so much more of different class makes sense now)

*picnic in the real hyde park- we missed the picnic crew and catherine's pizza

*Portobello markets--lots of antique costume jewellery, vintage stuff, sensational fresh fruit and mozarella & tomato salad

*Notting hill festival--the largest, most people filled street party in the world. So much dancing, street drinking and black booty. Furthered our desires to be black, or at least be able to dance as well.

*tate modern- picassos, pollocks, warhols, monets. impressive

*the globe theatre- well we didnt actually go in, as you had to pay (and its not the original anyway so i dont know how the price is justified)saw the gift shop though--£2.50 'groundling' coins and capulet and montague temporary tattoos.

*piano bar with wine and canadian hippy friend

*harrods- has to be seen to be believed- people actually do their food shopping (and we thought m&s was pricey) baked lemon ricotta= worth going to london again

*camden town- we caught the tube there but no funky records with that old motown sound. left arms still in tact.

*so not only was our flight delayed, but, when going through security---WE HAD TO TAKE OUR SHOES OFF, BODY SEARCHED, OUR BAGS CHECKED (as in everything taken out and gone through) AND OUR GLUE, HAND CREAM, M&S CHOCOLATE MOUSSE AND LIGHTER CONFISCATED. they tried to take emmas pawpaw ointment away from her but she argued " i can only get it in australia! i cant use anything else on my lips" so she had to put it on her lips to prove that it wasnt an explosive. so no one stress, emmas lips are going to be ok.

*covent garden- no eliza doolittle but plenty of good lookers and buskers

*romantic strolls by the thames

so there you have it, london was ours. we would have painted it red but there seemed to be enough of that around the place. fucking commies.
peace out

so the russian futurists were not the sharp dressed 6 piece experimental bunch of hotties we expected. Rather, the Whelan's stage was graced by two chubb white guys wearing hoodies. Nevertheless, pretty good sound. irish soldiers make good friends. They buy you drinks, whistle down a taxi and then, pay for it! But with that comes the downsides: annoying phone calls, even more annoying sms and hurt pride when informed "theres someone back home".

needless to say, the next morning we awoke in our apartment on bachelors walk (keelias uncle has connections) and staggered down to spar to get us some hangover food. our salvation came in the form of two thoughtfully prepared breakfast bagels- one with a base of bacon, complimented with an egg and tomato sauce, the other a layer of cream cheese topped with a crispy rasher of irish bacon. the photo below speaks for itself. enjoyment x100

sunday we had a day trip to belfast. only 2hours north of dublin, but worlds away with a differing currency and of course, mindset. unbeknownst to us, sunday the 13th august marked 25 years since the famous hunger strikes that plagued the terrorised north. as such, we stood in suprise and awe as we watched former IRA prisoners march alongside gerry adams and young children carrying sinn fein propaganda and historical photographs. amazing stuff. driving through the catholic area (segregated from the protestant by large brick walls), the murals that we had read about throughout yr 12 lit(thanks seamus heaney)were everywhere. a really interesting day. ps. keelia met danny morrison. if you dont know, dont ask.

marks and spencers cookies rock (alicia: perfect amount of salt) as does penneys. so cheap. so good.

tuesday was the day of the tourist; visiting both the National Gallery and National Museum, viewing both a Picasso print and several mutilated bog bodies. Again, kudos to seamus. after a day in watching cirlce of friends, we motivated ourselves to move off our couches and hit the town, that being antics night at crawdaddy. Mongey would have appreciated the back to back DFA produced tracks, and sandy, the beautiful men.

camera obscura sunday night, tuesday london is calling. hope all is well, missing the good times with y'all xxxx

dublin!

Current Mood: tired
After an emotional departure from Perth airport, a ridiculously long customs queue, almost missing our flight and getting yelled at by qantas staff, we got on our way to dirty dub. the flight was uncomfortable, the stopover in changi too short, the stopover in frankfurt painfully long but the vision of green that greeted us on the frankfurt runway raised our spirits.

we caught up with the fam, went to the local 'chippery' (as Keelia has christened it) and slept for 13 hours. today, after warnings to 'not look like tourists' we left the house wearing long sleeves and scarves while the locals paraded around in t-shirts and shorts on an overcast and windy day. crazy irish.

after an embarrassing episode with the bus driver (the change goes in the slot, not in the driver's hand), we made our way to dublin. we wandered along o'connell street, strolled romantically by the liffey, and were engulfed by the culture and cobbled streets in temple bar. the galleries, record stores and bookshops were grand, and we sampled our first cup of irish coffee as well as an authentic lunch at an irish pub (yes kate, it really was in ireland this time).

we tried not to spend money, we really did, but the 2 euro dresses seemed to good to pass by. and once the familiar taste of consumerism slid down our delicate throats we struggled to deny ourselves 19 euro CD's, bargains in topshop, tix to the russian futurists, blistex and so on and so forth.

and then, back to the complexities of the city's public transport system, YOU DON'T GET CHANGE!! instead, you receive a receipt entitling you to a pittance, that you have to take to the public transport authority if you so feel that you should receive the money you're owed (gasp!). pfft.
